ICEWIND
Again Came the Storm
Metalodic Records
Official Website

I don’t have any complaints lately since Canada has given me some good metal releases to listen to. Releases that have this air of freshness that the contemporary heavy and power metal scene need. So, I won’t hide from you the fact that I have big expectations from the second release of ICEWIND, especially when I learnt that they are hailing from Canada. However, things are not looking so good here. What I want to say is that ICEWIND play the kind of contemporary Euro power metal that I personally have listened to many times already and I don’t really miss at all. The guys, to be just with them, play well and seem that they are a tight band, but they never gave me as a listener something that I haven’t listened to before or something that will make me listen to their release again. It's the kind of release that only the people who listen to nothing more than power metal will appreciate. Personally, I had a good time listening to their European power metal, but I didn’t find here something memorable or elements that will make me listen to them again. They are typical and this genre (Euro power metal) needs something more in order to catch my interest. As I said, only the people that can’t imagine that there is any other genre except for power metal will enjoy this one.

HELVETETS PORT
Man with the Chains E.P.
High Roller Records
Official Website

With this band you have to forget everything that has to do with the contemporary metal scene. Their sound, their compositions and even the whole outlook of the band travels you back in the early 80’s. The era that heavy metal music was making its first step and was starting to form to the music that we love until now. It is true that there are quite a few bands that try to revive the 80’ spirit in our days. So, what’s the big deal with them? Well, in comparison to the other bands which are mostly inspired by early IRON MAIDEN and the N.W.O.B.H.M. movement, these guys seem to pay a tribute with their sound to the 80’s metal of their country (Sweden); a sound that is at the same time melodic and harsh. So, if bands like HEAVY LOAD and GOTHAM CITY say something to you, then this is a band that you have to check out. As for those who are not at all in the 80’s, then I don’t think that this release might arouse their interest. Without being original (that’s not the thing we ask from them), HELVETETS PORT have the talent to recreate a sound that seemed to be long time gone. The 3 songs that are included on this vinyl E.P are very good and show a band that evolves on the compositional level and can offer us even more interesting albums in the future. Until then, I will enjoy their 3 releases (2 EPs and 1 full length album).

POWER CRUE
The Sign of Rage
Lighten The Underground Records
Official Website

This is a re-issue on vinyl format of the first album of these Greek heavy metallers. The album was released in 1996 by the band itself. The CD now is a bit expensive and it's not so easily found so now you have the opportunity to buy it on vinyl for a good price. This reissue doesn’t have a bonus track but the vinyl has a good package and is limited in 330 copies only. The style of the album is classic heavy/power and was first released in a “weird” and tough era for the classic heavy metal sound. This album is very good for its genre and for me it's one of the best Greek metal albums! The songs that I like more are “Enemy Brothers” , “Before the End” and “Spent on You” which remind me of RUNNING WILD. The rest of the songs have also some parts that are really outstanding. This is a must purchase for the fans of the classic heavy metal sound and the grade is higher for them. The others had better look for something else but they could try to listen to it... They won’t lose!

ZUUL
Howl of the Wolf E.P.
High Roller Records
Official Website

I have listened to the full length of this band some time ago and although they were playing traditional metal, I never felt excited by what I was listening. I think that it has to do also with the fact that they had some punk rock elements in their sound. Anyway, the new release of the band is this vinyl E.P. which includes the following 2 compositions: “Howl of the Wolf” and “Skull Splitter”. Both songs are once again moving on the IRON MAIDEN way of playing metal and in comparison to their previous release, these are hitting straight to the core and are catchy and full of passion without any punk rock elements intruding here. These 2 songs show that the band has improved in the way they compose songs and I will be more than anxious to listen to their upcoming full length release. If you need to listen to some good heavy metal with balls, then this E.P. offers you 2 songs that will make you play them loud and bang your head like there is no tomorrow. Check them out…

INSTANZIA
Ghosts
Metalodic Records
Official Website

It is Christmas Eve and I think I was in the right mood to listen to something more melodic than the things that I usually listen to. I think that INSTANZIA from Canada was a good choice and after listening to their album a couple of times, I can surely say that they were worth my time. These talented power metallers make obvious, from the first tunes of their album, that they have a good sense of melody and also the knack to compose songs that you can actually remember after finishing listening to their whole album. Their sound can be simply described as European power metal with some progressive metal structures in their compositions. So, if you like bands like ORDEN OGAN or good old EDGUY, then “Ghosts” of INSTANZIA is a release than can give you more than you actually expect. It is a release that every European power metal fan should check out, because he/she will find a fresh approach of musical themes that make him/her love this metal genre. Personally, I had more than a pleasant time listening to this album and actually I have found some very good compositions that will make me listen to “Ghosts” again and again. These compositions are: “Power of the Mind”, “A Genius Who Believes” and “The Desert Fox” (this 11 minute epic song has a SABATON feeling).

CALADMOR
Midwinter
Twilight Records
Official Website

Here is a release that gave mo more thaN I was expecting to listen to. Their label characterizes them as folk/gothic metal. Ok! There are indeed folk elements in the music of CALADMOR, but I don’t agree with the term gothic only because they have a female vocalist. Actually, “Midwinter” can be described as a folk/pagan metal album that draws influences from groups like FALCONER, ENSIFERUM, BATHORY (the epic metal years), SKYCLAD and BLIND GUARDIAN. As I said the main role on the vocals has the female singer Barbara "Babs" Brawand who has a crystal clear voice and gives to the compositions a sense of fairy tale. There are however moments that she does a duet with male vocals that sing in a harsh way and I think that this fact gives to the music of CALADMOR a balance between the melody and the harshness. Also, one other thing that I have enjoyed in the music of CALADMOR is that the guitars actually have a lead role and they don’t simply follow as a rhythmic background the melodies played by the folk instruments. “Midwinter” is a very beautiful and almost complete release, especially if you consider the fact that it's the debut release of the band. If they only had more variety, they would be perfect. Anyway, the truth is that this is a very good release and an album that you have to check out. A good start for a new band…

THE ETERNAL SUFFERING
Miasma
I For An I Records
Official Website

The cover artwork of "Miasma" makes you think this is a death grind group... However things aren't always what they seem... so here we have a band from Athens, Greece playing black metal in the vein of DISSECTION and DIMMU BORGIR with frozen riffs, amazing technical fast parts and a few atmospheric passages. The vocals are purely black metal and they reek of havoc, hatred and devastation with their interpretation. The melodies are mainly created by the guitars which are imaginative and not boring at all. The production is simply superb... Perhaps one of the best true black metal albums of the year. Don't miss it!

NACHTGESCHREI
Ardeo
Massacre Records
Official Website

There's no doubt that folk, Viking or medieval metal, call it what you will since in most cases there isn't much of a differentiation in the music itself, has been rather popular this past decade. There's no other way for me to explain the countless bands out there that deliver this type of music and like I've mentioned before when something like this happens, few are the bands that indeed have something new or fresh to offer us. The Germans NACHTGESCHREI aren't among them I'm afraid... It's not that their music is bad, but it's just way too ordinary and common for me to find any elements that would catch my attention and intrigue me in a way to make me want to listen to it again. I've listened to "Ardeo" several times in order to do this presentation and unfortunately I have to say it's an album I don't feel the urge to listen to again. Music-wise the Germans play modern melodic metal with clean vocals singing in German and the whole thing is wrapped up with folk and medieval tunes performed by bagpipes. The album has a nice atmosphere, but as I stated earlier it's just very common, constantly reminding you of other similar sounding bands. So, I guess "Ardeo" can only be good for the die hard fans of this genre and for no one else.

CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN
Psalm of the Grand Destroyer
Candlelight Records
Official Website

Massive brutal and miry death grind metal with the grind aspect of the music dominating for the most part is what we get from the masters of the kind CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN. As with their previous work, here too we find some parts and ideas truly levelling that pound on your brain relentlessly and mercilessly! The volume, the heaviness and the brutal depth that come out of the guitars are amazing. I want to stress out here that the guitarists can and know how to play, so they don't need to hide, like others do, their lack of skills behind a constructed noisy chaos. On the contrary, they are truly skillful guitar players!!! CIRLCE OF DEAD CHILDREN are a top notch grind band and "Psalm of the Grand Destroyer" is a must have for all the fans of this genre!

SYN:DROM
With Flesh Unbound
ViciSolum Productions
Official Website

Technical death grind with chaotic death metal vocals is what we are offered here by SYN:DROM. Their compositions have the "scent" of havoc and calamity that's so necessary to this genre and their melodies creep in a dark way dominating and destroying our brain cells. The rhythm section is excellent and the band has an I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E drummer who does countless twists, turns and changes in his performance. There were many the parts that SYN:DROM's riffs brought to my mind MORBID ANGEL and a bit of IMMOLATION, but the guys don't copy and I want to stress this out and make it clear to everyone. Amazing band that has the quality and greatness of CRYPTOPSY.

CREMATORY
Black Pearls - Greatest Hits
Massacre Records
Official Website

In my humble opinion CREMATORY is one of the best gothic metal bands out there. They might not be nowadays among the top names of the metal scene, but one way to tell how good a band is, is by checking out how influential it is... and CREMATORY has been influential, no doubt about it! I remember when I was still quite young, in fact I was in high school and was first exploring the metal scene... I didn't know many bands, but I was trying to explore all the metal genres and I was always eager to listen to new bands and sounds. So at some point I stumbled upon CREMATORY who had then released "Tears of Time" which was a huge success and gave the band a spot among the best groups of that time. But this song and that album didn't do just that... CREMATORY managed to turn a great number of metal heads towards the gothic metal sound and for me personally, although I'm not a big fan of this genre, they were the beginning of exploring other gothic metal bands as well. For me this fact alone is a good example of what being a big band means. Anyway I also want to say here for those who don't know much about CREMATORY that they aren't a typical one dimensional gothic metal band, but they add and enrich their sound with other elements like death metal or modern touches and even with some electronic samples. This means that their music has the necessary variety and "Black Pearls - Greatest Hits" is one of the best and fullest compilations I've ever listened to. It's a double CD release containing the best songs of the band and it also has a DVD so you can enjoy them live too! "Black Pearls - Greatest Hits" is a must have compilation for the band's fans and for those who want to check out the gothic metal scene and want to start with some good bands!

UNLIGHT
SulphurBlooded
Massacre Records
Official Website

Pure, solid underground black metal with frozen riffs filled with hatred is what UNLIGHT deliver with their music that has the classic Norwegian sound, while it also has amazing melodic black solos from guitars that rip your soul apart. A few keyboard parts work in favour of the band's compositions creating the proper atmosphere. The production has the dirty and "muddy" sound that's necessary to signify the band's underground nature without ever losing any melodic parts. Abyssmal fast parts interchange with and follow mid tempo parts, keeping the listener's interest intact throughout the album. This is definitely one of the best black metal albums of the year with compositions filled with inspiration and passionate playing. Well done!

TROLL BENDS FIR
1516/Order of the Holy Hop
Independent
Official Website

Folk and Viking metal music seem to be pretty popular this past decade and I think everyone can easily assume this from the plethora of bands that deliver this kind of music. However, I have to say, here too, like in all other genres and cases few are the bands that stand out and really have something to say and offer to the scene. Most bands regurgitate the same ideas and recipes to the point I find the whole thing bland, uninspired and tiring. TROLL BENDS FIR is exactly the opposite of what I just described and this is why it's so difficult for me to understand why they are still unsigned while other talentless and unimaginative bands manage to ink deals. Anyway music-wise the band plays folk metal sung in their mother tongue which is Russian, but I didn't mind one moment the choice of the language, because the whole album has such a great flow that it sweeps you off your feet and takes you along! I loved the album from beginning till the end and what won me I think besides, of course, the great compositions with their catchy riffs and sing along choruses is the fact that each song seemed to have an identity of each own and by that I mean that each song introduces different elements to the listener and thus you never get tired. You'll listen to classic folk beer songs in the vein of KORPIKLAANI, some more straightforward folk tunes a la IN EXTREMO and SALTATIO MORTIS and some more medieval themes that brought to my mind a non extreme version of WAYLANDER. This doesn't mean that TROLL BENDS FIR copies any of the aforementioned bands, not at all since the guys have managed to form and shape a sound of their own... I'm just offering you some band names just to give you a clue of the beauty and variety of this release. If you like folk metal, then this is a release you shouldn't miss!!

UNLEASHED
As Yggdrassil Trembles
Nuclear Blast Records
Official Website

The latest work from UNLEASHED remains on the high standards they've managed to reach again these past few years with their pure, dry, aggressive death metal that's imbued in a plethora of Viking elements. The production is clear and professional, showing off the band's talent and all their skills, like for example their aggressive rhythm section and the guitar quality of their solos. UNLEASHED many years now have managed to offer us quality death metal straight from the depths of their hearts without ever selling their music out and changing their style. On the contrary their goal and aim is to enrich it with new and fresh ideas.

SEVENTH SIN
Stranger Among Gods E.P.
Independent
Official Website

Why does Canada still give us good metal bands? Well I think that the musicians over there have the passion and also the strange urge to combine sounds that might not seem to fit with one another. How will it sound to you, if I was to tell you that there is a band out there which combines the 70’s hard rock, as it was presented by bands like DEEP PURPLE, URIAH HEEP with the traditional 80’s metal influenced from bands like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, SAVATAGE and ACCEPT while at the same time sounding so modern and fresh? Admit it, you will have a hard time to believe it. This band, however, do exist and with their second E.P., which is a real hell raiser, prove us that hard rock and metal is actually the same music and fit together just fine, especially if you have the talent and the imagination to combine them. Although “Stranger Among Gods” is a 5 track E.P. I dare to say that it's such a complete and mature work that many bands with lots of full length albums on their back would envy. For me personally this release is the surprise of this year for traditional metal and I only wish that this review will make you discover this great band. Also I want to stand on the warm and harsh voice of the singer Aarom Hemmersbach who sounds as a mix between UDO and Jon Oliva of SAVATAGE. All in all this is an amazing release with all tracks being just great. An album that sounds at the same time heavy and emotional. My congratulations…

THE EXTINCT DREAMS
Shining of Beyond
Stygian Crypt Productions
Official Website

THE EXTINCT DREAMS have a pretty dark and full of melancholy name that suits them just fine since they've chosen to follow and serve the doom metal genre. Actually their sound isn't that simple and since doom metal has several sub-genres I think I should clear out here that this Russian combo delivers ambient funeral doom metal that's infused and enriched with quite a few death metal touches that spice up the compositions and make them sound more extreme. The death metal aspect of their music is mainly to be found on the growling vocals and on some blast beats here and there. Other than that the songs are based and focused on the creation of dark and bitter emotions with the keyboards and the melodies from the acoustic guitar forming an atmospheric ambient end result. The lyrics are all sung in the band's mother tongue, which is Russian, so I can't tell you much about the topics they deal with other than what I've read in the press release and what I can assume from their cover artwork. THE EXTINCT DREAMS deal with astral themes and that's all the insight I can offer you! The artwork, layout and package are great and the production really good, so if you are a fan of ambient funeral doom/death metal then this might be a release you might wanna check out. The rest of you steer away!

TIMELESS HALL
Timeless Hall
Steel Legacy Records
Official Website

This is a re-issue of the only album of this Danish metal band by one of the best Greek metal labels. The album was released in 1994 and the band later changed its name to BREED. The re-issue is in 1000 CD copies and in 333 vinyl copies. It contains also three bonus tracks “True Love”,“Of Shades and Sorrow” and “Tears in the Rain”. The style could be characterized as lyrical power metal. The band’s basic influence seems to be QUEENSRYCHE so the album kind of lacks in power. The best songs of the album are on the second side. “Lost Horizon”, “Sadness”, “Everlasting Rush” and “Truth Within” are definitely my favourites. This is a must for the fans of this genre and the grade for them is of course higher. This album will also appeal to friends of progressive metal. The friends of classic ‘80s heavy/power metal, thrash metal and epic metal should stay away from this unless they like lyrical power metal.

UNDER SILENCE
Memories Lost in Time
Independent
Official Website

I think that epic metal has its honored days lately. By the way winter from the ancient times was the era that the troops were relaxing and it was time for bards to do their job and sing about heroism and bravery. UNDER SILENSE are coming from Spain and more specifically from the Basque country. With their music they want to sing and tell stories about the past of their place and due to this they try to create a sound that is both power and epic metal. If you can imagine a mixture among BLIND GUARDIAN, MANOWAR and IRON MAIDEN then you will have pretty much a clear idea of what you should expect here. To all these add lyrics (written in English) that somehow are close to the way that BATHORY wrote their epic lyrics. I mean that they speak more about emotions, pride and the beauty of their country than for specific events and battles. I think that the strong elements of this band are the memorable melodies and the catchy sing along choruses. As a conclusion I have to admit that UNDER SILENCE achieve to create the atmosphere and the feelings they want through their music and this first release of them shows that they are a band that is worth your time to listen to. Check them out…

PROPHECY
Illusion of Time
Phantom Records
Official Website

This is the first album of this French progressive metal band. For the last 6-7 years I haven’t been much into progressive metal. But I still listen to some from time to time. The style of the band is progressive metal with some progressive rock elements. This album is really good for its style. This isn’t something that I would say easily for a progressive metal album! My favorite tracks of the album are “On the Edge” (it partly reminds me a bit of URIAH HEEP!!) , “Keys of Destiny”, “Leave Me Be” while the big homonym tracks of the album (“Illusion of Time”) and of the band respectively (“Prophecy”) are also very good and manage to capture the interest of the listener. They can make some improvements on their new album but this is a top quality album for its metal genre so it’s a MUST for the fans of progressive metal. The rest of you should give it a try. One of the best progressive metal releases from France along with SILENT FALL for this year!

VIRGIN STEELE
The Black Light Bacchanalia
SPV Records
Official Website

Metal heads are a demanding audience especially when it has to do with bands that released more than one masterpiece in their career. And VIRGIN STEELE definitely belong to the category of bands that gave us some exceptional albums. So, this sometimes causes extreme reactions when a band doesn’t release an album that is equal to its great past releases. From what I have noticed so far the reactions for the latest release of the band range from saying that it is a bad album to at least being mediocre. Because of all this I tried to listen to this release more and present it when the big fuss would pass. After listening to this release, the most undoubted conclusion is that “The Black Light Bacchanalia” is a release full of controversies. First of all you can’t deny that a lot of work has be done to the creative part of compositions and lyrics, but on the other hand the awful production and the annoying drum machine come and reduce a lot the quality of this release. I understand that the concept story of the album (which is great and speaks about the confrontation of the old and new religion) demands more atmospheric music, but I think that the album also needed some boost of energy in order to earn some variety. Personally now, I think that this release holds all the elements that we love in VIRGIN STEELE and also shows a band that still tries to experiment with its music (I don’t agree with the guys that say that this album shows VIRGIN STEELE tired), however it lacks on “hit” songs that will make you love this album instantly. Definitely it's a release that demands your attention and you have to listen to it more than a couple of times in order to fully understand what VIRGIN STEELE want to do with this release. As I said above the only serious negative factor that I find on this release is the weak production. So, as a conclusion I have to say that “The Black Light Bacchanalia” is an album that brings VIRGIN STEELE back to its natural sound after the bad “Visions of Eden” and also shows a band that tries to find back its good epic/lyrical metal form. Personally, I will continue to listen to this release, because I certainly believe that it has a lot to give to me as a listener and yes I have to admit that it's one of the most atmospheric releases of the band and it is not offered so much for headbanging.

ABARAX
Blue Room
Cyclops Records
Official Website

This is the second album of this German progressive rock band. The first one “Crying of the Whales” was released a couple of years ago by the same record label. In the basic influences of ABARAX we seem to find PINK FLOYD. Both of their albums are of a really high quality but this won’t influence classic or extreme metal fans heh, heh, heh. The vocals of Andre Blaeute are really touching while the guitar work of Dennis Grasekamp is really good! The albums has in general top notch stuff but “Autumn Storm”, “Life” , “Red Roses and Bullets” are really my favourite tunes. This is the best album for 2010 in this rock genre along with MYSTERY’s “One Among the Living”. Great album is also the debut album of the French band PROPHECY “Illusion of Time” but this has also a lot of progressive metal and a lot of progressive rock elements. This is a must buy for the fans of progressive rock. The rest of you should invest only if you like progressive rock.

MAGIC KINGDOM
Symphony of War
Limb Music
Official Website

Six years after their “Metallic Tragedy” release, MAGIC KINGDOM strike again with a double – CD release which promises a lot of quality time to their fans. The band, for those who don’t know about them, play power metal music with lots neoclassical metal touches. If someone says that they sound like a mix of YNGWIE MALMSTEEN and RHAPSODY, they won’t be far from the truth. In their new release you can also find influences from EDGUY (such an example is the track “Million Sinners World”) and RIOT (just listen to the song “Monte Cristo”). The band might not bring something new to this genre, but who really cares about originality when you have an album full of inspiration, passion and freshness. Imagine that the whole album has a duration of over 80 minutes and I listened to it without getting tired at all. On the first CD you will have the chance to listen to straight forward heavy/power metal songs. The kind that makes you sing along and play the album loud. The second CD is entitled “Metallic Tragedy - Chapter 2: The Holy Pentalogy” and it is a metal symphony full of epic – atmospheric interludes and thunderous guitar riffs. All in all “Symphony of War” is a neoclassical power metal album with a quality that you can hardly find in such releases in our days. To this result helps the technique of the guitarist, Dushan Petrossi, who doesn’t try to show off and his skillful playing is only used to make the music of MAGIC KINGDOM even more colourful.  I think that this is a must have release for the fans of power metal.

FUNERAL TEARS
Your Life My Death
Marche Funebre Productions
Official Website

This Russian one man band doesn't leave much to assumption or imagination since with its moniker reveals in a pretty good and clear way the direction its music is headed to... which is no other, of course, than funeral doom metal. "Your Life My Death" is a good sample and example of what funeral doom metal is and stands for and if I have to give my own interpretation to this genre I'd say it's a kind of music that's not so much based on the sound and riffs themselves as on the dark emotions it evokes and the blackened funeral atmospheres it creates. I don't think someone would so much here funeral doom metal for the riffs or the experimentations he/she would expect to experiemce, but rather for this dark creeping feeling it has and its ambience. To that extent I have to say that FUNERAL TEARS achieves its goals and makes a good job creating the right emotions, but if I have to be a bit strict and take into consideration the wide range of metallers out there, then I have to say that although this debut is decent, it isn't something that extraordinary that will make people outside funeral doom metal check it out. So, the points I give it try to encompass everything and everyone, but if you are a funeral doom metaller, then the mark is higher and you might want to check this album out!

FOLKODIA
Battlecry
Stygian Crypt Productions
Official Website

FOLKODIA is a project band that is formed by members of the other project band called FOLKEARTH. This one, as FOLKEARTH, is based on the same idea, the gathering of musicians from all over the world in order to play folk/Viking metal and through their music to intorduce to people the legends and myths of their countries. All these sound very well and extremely interesting, but with their third work FOLKODIA don’t manage to offer something that can surpass the boundaries of the typical folk/Viking metal. With a few exceptions like the songs “Blood – Red Axes”, “The Celestial Giants”, “Invoking the Sidhe” and “The Oath of Runes” (this one almost has a BATHORY touch due to the vocals of Rhode Rachel) that have some good ideas and manage to transmit to the listener the epic/nostalgic feeling of a past long gone, the other compositions without being bad are simply too typical for the genre. Personally, one thing that I dislike to this kind of music is that it gives the first role to folk/traditional instruments and the metal ones don’t do anything else than play the rhythm parts. I would really like to listen to something different in this kind of music, like a musical “dialogue” between the folk and rock/metal instruments (something that SKYCLAD and JETHRO TULL used to do). Anyway, “Battlecry” is not a bad release; however it's an album that only the ones who are really crazy about folk/Viking metal will love to listen to. As for the rest, we will try to find something more interesting from this genre…

ANKHAGRAM
Neverending Sorrow
Stygian Crypt Productions
Official Website

ANKHAGRAM is a one man project hailing from Russia formed back in 2005. So far they have already released four full length works and quite a few singles and split CDs which means this is a rather productive band regardless if it only has one member writing, playing and recording everything. "Neverending Sorrow" is the band's sophomore studio woñk which has recently been re-released with all its tracks remastered and with a new artwork. Sound-wise the band and their label did a great job producing a clear and heavy sound that allows you to listen to everything that goes on within the six songs that comprise this album. Music-wise now there isn't much I can tell since ANKHAGRAM deliver a pretty straightforward and typical atmospheric doom/death metal with some gothic and ambient touches here and there. I'm not saying that "Neverending Sorrow" is a bad album, not at all, but on the other hand it's nothing special we haven't heard before numerous times already. So my verdict is that only the hardcore doom death metallers should check this band out, because for the rest of us this album hasn't much to offer. The song that impressed me the most here was "...End of Everything..." which is actually a very good version of "Marche Funèbre" originally written by Frédéric Chopin.

This is the second album of the band which was formed by Fulberto Serena one of the members of the mighty DARK QUARTERER. Their style is mid tempo power metal with some epic touches. Unfortunately the songwriting didn’t manage to catch my attention that much. From the album I think that "Hastings" is the only song that stands out while the new version of DARK QUARTERER’s song "Colossus of Argil" is definitely inferior when compared to the original track. So in conclusion I don’t suggest buying that album even though it isn’t a bad one, but I think there are many great albums on which you should invest your money.

SAMANDRIEL
Awakening
Independent
Official Website

When I saw their country of origin, I knew that I was about to listen to a good release. We can talk a lot about that, but personally I think that Canada has a metal scene that 8 out of 10 times gives some worthy to mention bands. SAMANDRIEL with this 6 track EP play the kind of music that we can describe as symphonic metal, however it escapes from the typical clichés of the genre. OK! They have the operatic female vocals and the brutal male ones, which both work fine, but except for that the band tries to create a more personal sound. First of all their music is a blend of traditional, progressive rock/metal and power metal. The thing that I have appreciated in SAMANDRIEL is that contrary to other bands of this genre, they don’t try to impress the listener by adding pompous and pointless parts; instead they try to create songs that sound both dynamic and atmospheric at the same time. “Awakening”, in general, is a release that brings something fresh and new to the tired genre of symphonic heavy/power metal and the friends of this sound must check them out. I believe that they are on the right path and I hope they continue this way away from any cheap impressions and trends. My favourite songs from this release are: “Holy Load”, “Demise of the Icewitch” and “Harmonious Madness”.

KIMAERA
Solitary Impact
Stygian Crypt Productions
Official Website

After approximately four years from the release of their debut "Ebony Veiled" KIMAERA is striking back with their sophomore studio effort titled "Solitary Impact" presenting us a solid and mesmerizing rendition of atmospheric doom/death metal. The band hails from Lebanon and this alone makes this release worth your while meaning that it takes lots of determination and love, from their part, for what they do in order to be able to sustain the obstacles and keep on releasing albums. Like I said in the beginning, "Solitary Impact" is a really good sample of atmospheric doomed death metal with lots of oriental elements and symphonic parts. The ethereal female vocals along with the use of the violin make the end result even more varied, colourful and complex and although KIMAERA aren't reinventing this metal style with their release, they managed to put forth a really qualitative work that the fans of ANATHEMA, AMORPHIS, HAGGARD, ORPHANED LAND and LAKE OF TEARS, just to name some bands to give you a further clue, will definitely appreciate!

HANKER
Conspiracy of Mass Extinction
Hellion Records
Official Website

This is the fifth album of this killer Canadian power metal band! This is definitely one of the strongest comebacks for 2010 (along with SCORPIONS, HEATHEN, OVERKILL and ENFORCER)! Canada seems to be on top form these past few years and the releases of HANKER, EVIL SURVIVES, SKULLFIST and STRIKER are here to prove me right. The album is in the known style of HANKER -technical power metal which has its own identity! The album is definitely one of their best and for me it is in the top 5 releases of the year! The songs even though last long and are technical don’t tire the listener at all! It isn’t so easy to say which are the best songs but “Beyond the Pale”, “Who’s Crying Loud?” , “Feel it Again” and the homonym track are among the top. The production is really good and the guitar work that has been done is tremendous! This is a must for the fans of power metal and a really good choice for the rest of the metal heads.

NEUROSIS
Live at Roadburn 2007
Neurot Recordings
Official Website

"Live at Roadburn 2007" is the first release from NEUROSIS since 2007's "Given to the Rising" and as you can tell from the album title it's a live album recorded at Roadburn festival that takes place annually in Holland. There this American combo was the headlining act and as we are informed they played in front of a diehard audience. Well music is a matter of taste, as everything of course, so I'm not going to analyze whether I like NEUROSIS's music or not... simply cause I don't. I find their weird mixture of progressive sludge with post-hardcore and all those tribal and ambient elements that are present in their sound...well weird, boring, tiring and uninspired. Their music to me is like a slow grunting noise with no highs or lows. However, this is a live CD I'm here to present so I think I'll insist a bit more on the "liveness" of this effort. After all live recordings are bought by the bands' diehard fans which means that they won't care one bit about my personal opinion of this band's music since they already know and like it. I didn't like "Live at Roadburn 2007" for one more reason which is the most important in this case... I didn't find it to be much of a live CD... I mean there's no audience to be heard unless they were all dead silent watching the show reverently which is rather weird for a metal concert and we only get to hear them cheer between the songs. Now the songs are too clinically and flawlessly played with no mistakes, no changes, no noise or sound problems whatsoever and not once did I hear the singer talk to the audience, interact with them or at least introduce the song they were about to play. So my verdict is that this is a live CD made in a studio somewhere and even if I'm totally off, then as a fan I wouldn't wanna listen to a live CD that has no live feeling at all!

HEATHENDOM
Symbolist
Metal On Metal Records
Official Website

Here we have the second full length album of this Greek metal band, HEATHENDOM. Their style could be characterized as mid tempo power metal with some doom metal elements. The album is quite good but I think that the guys should improve their songwriting skills a bit more. The truth is that I enjoyed their demo, which was also re-released by Metal On Metal a couple of months ago, more. The songs have some interesting parts but they don’t maintain the interest of the listener intact throughout the album. This is an album that I recommend to the fans of this metal genre but I guess it will not appeal to the fans that are not so much in this kind of stuff and sounds.

EXCITER
Death Machine
Massacre Records
Official Website

I think that everyone who knows a little bit about EXCITER, expects to listen from them uncompromised speed metal music that is raw and a singer that spits his lungs out while he screams every word of the lyrics.”Death Machine”, the new release of this legendary Canadian metal band, finds them in extreme mood and this is obvious from the raw energy that is unleashed from every composition that is included here. If I have to compare this album with one of their glorious past, I would say that it reminded me of their "Long Live the Loud" album. OK! I am not saying that this one has the quality of this classic release. Only time will tell this...  I just want to underline that the band released an album that respects its past and I believe that it will also leave satisfied their fans. I would like to comment on the great voice of the new singer of the band; Kenny "Metal Mouth" Winter who sounds like Udo on anabolics and fits perfectly to the heavy metal sound of EXCITER. All in all this is a good release from an experienced band that knows how to deliver, till the present day, some great speed metal tunes. My favourite songs from the album are: “Death Machine”, “Dungeon Descendants”, “Razor in your Back”, “HellFire” and “Skull Breaker” (this one has a killer hidden solo in it).

STEELWING
Lord of the Wasteland
NoiseArt Records
Official Website

This is the first full length album of this new Swedish metal band! They play classic heavy metal the way it should be played. One of their basic influences is definitely IRON MAIDEN!! The album is really good and doesn’t tire you because it doesn’t last so much. The songs are all good but I could say that some of them appealed more to me. These are: “Headhunter”, “The Nightcrawler”, “Point of Singularity” and “Clash of the two Tribes”. This album is really a must have for the classic metal fans!!! This is also an album that all metal heads should hear! For me it is one of the top releases of 2010 along with bands like SCORPIONS, ATLANTEAN KODEX, ARRYAN PATH, ENFORCER and SKULLFIST. These days STEELWING are touring with SABATON, but unfortunately we didn’t have the opportunity to see them in Greece! We will wait anxiously for their next step!!

WARCRY
Revenge in Blood
Pure Steel Records
Official Website

Back in the late 90’s a new trend popped up in the heavy metal scene and it was called retro thrash metal. The bands of this kind of music were actually mixing 80’s thrash with traditional metal sounds and had a production that was trying to imitate the 80’s sound. Most of these bands were fun to listen to, but after a while they made you realize that nothing is like the original and because of that they were easily forgotten. The only band of this retro movement that is worth to be mentioned is no other than BEWITCHED. WARCRY from Germany in their second release have this retro thrash feeling and the nostalgia for the 80’s metal sound. They actually mix in their music N.W.O.B.H.M. influences along with bay area and European thrash riffs and also they have the typical harsh vocals. I would say that they are quite close to bands like SACRED STEEL and BEWITCHED, but without being as good as them. Actually, although they have this sincere true metal attitude, they miss on good ideas. Ideas that will make you remember their compositions or even motivate you to listen to the album again. I believe that most of you, will find it hard to listen to it again. Sincerely, the album is mediocre except for the passion of the band for heavy metal, but it seems that this is not enough to make them noticeable. “Revenge in Blood” is not a bad release, but it surely left me indifferent (except for the decent cover to OMEN’s “Deathrider”). I think that their debut album was better than this one…

ALLEN LANDE
The Showdown
Frontiers Records
Official Website

A new release for the project of two of the best singers that the contemporary metal scene has. And they are no others than Russell Allen (SYMPHONY X) and JORN LANDE (too many bands to mention). Personally, I am not a fan of such projects since most of the time they turn out to be disappointments. However, the previous releases of this cooperation earned some good reviews and so I decided to listen to their new release entitled “The Showdown”. The sound of the band moves in the paths of melodic heavy metal and hard rock, a style that both singers know well from their main bands. However, the result here with only exception the performance of these two vocalists is not satisfying at all. First of all the melodies and lead guitars that I have listened to here, have been already played a thousand times in other releases like this one. Here everything is so typical and clinical, that you feel that is more of an experiment rather than a music project. And this of course leads to an album that has no personality and no emotion at all. All here seems to be written with only purpose the singers to show off their vocal skills, but where are the melodies and above all the compositions that will make you listen to this release again and again? Nowhere. One other thing that bothers me with this release is that all the music is written from other musicians and not from the singers. So, what kind of personal project are we talking about? This is fucking pop attitude and for me totally unacceptable for the hard rock/metal scene. To put an epilogue to this review, I have to say that the album has nothing to give and is so typical and boring that I can’t imagine a person who listens to hard rock and heavy metal, will find here something noticeable. Avoid it, because it is a piece of plastic and nothing more.

SYMPHORCE
Unrestricted
AFM Records
Official Website

There are some bands like SYMPHORCE that many people who are into metal music say good words about, but when I listened to some of their previous albums I couldn’t realize what was special about them to make them stand out amongst the thousand metal bands that are out there. The band used to play a kind of down tuned power/thrash metal that was close to what NEVERMORE were doing back in the late 90’s early 00’s era. So, when their new release fell in my hands, I didn’t jump from excitement because I had to present it. It seems though that in the metal scene if you are persistent there is a god out there that gives you more than a second chance. On “Unrestricted” SYMPHORCE seem to have left aside the dark atmosphere of their early albums and focused more on creating modern metal with many grooves. I think I wouldn’t be far by saying that on this album they have lot of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY elements in their sound, along with some hard rock touches, but yet their sound is heavy metal oriented. I think that with this release SYMPHORCE have found the music formula that fits them best and although their album is modern at the same time it's also traditional. At least for me that I am more into the classic metal sound, this release sounded really good to my ears. So, if you can appreciate good metal tunes no matter what era they come from, then here you will listen to a sincere and enjoyable album. Hope they continue this way…

FINAL DEPRAVITY
Nightmare 13
Nihilistic Empire / Twilight Vertrieb Records
Official Website

FINAL DEPRAVITY is a newcoming band from the Ruhr region in Germany and they deliver the kind of metal this region is famous for. What's that? Thrash metal of course since this is the place where SODOM and KREATOR come from. Music-wise these young guys seem to have been heavily influenced by the two aforementioned bands, but they don't stop just there. Their sound incorporates a great deal of elements from the American thrash metal, bringing to mind a bit of SLAYER from time to time and also having quite a few melodic death metal references thrown in. "Nightmare 13" is spiced up even more with the addition of some more modern metal elements and by that I mean some core touches that can be found dispersed within the songs and in the way the singer sometimes interprets the lyrics. With all this being said I think you've had a pretty clear impression of these guys' music and as for my verdict I'm afraid I have to say this is mediocre stuff. It's not bad, rather the contrary since it's well played and with lots of passion, but it's too common and too uninspired. I've listened to the same riffs, ideas and approach a thousand times already so hearing FINAL DEPRAVITY's rendition did nothing to me. "Nightmare 13" is good, but nothing too special that would make me spend more time than I have to in order to do this presentation. Perhaps some hardcore thrash metal maniacs will find something interesting here.

DEATH METAL.BE
Sampler 9
Independent
Official Website

I think it's pretty safe to say that this is one of the oldest and best compilation series out there for a wide variety of reasons. First of all all the releases so far are qualitative and I like the fact that the bands participating here put a lot of effort in this. What I mean by that is that the people responsible for this compilation give the bands six months of time to come up with something cool and representative of their sound and most times the bands decide to do something new and offer us an unreleased song, which gives extra points to obtaining this sampler. After all I don't see a point in buying a compilation when I know all or most of the songs beforehand... Besides these, there are other reasons that make this sampler appealing with the most important of which being the fact that this is the ninth compilation in a row for deathmetal.be which subsequently means this is a successful endeavour. There's also the fact that throughout the years I've come to know numerous great bands from Belgium and the last reason is that this is one of the best mediums to learn about a country's underground metal scene. "Sampler 9" has one extra reason that makes it worth your while and this is its musical variety. Up until now the samplers used to feature extreme metal bands only, but this time you will also have the chance to listen to some dark progressive metal (by the way I was extremely impressed by THE DIFFERENCE), folk metal, stoner, deathcore and metalcore along with the grind, black and death metal songs we are used to hearing from this series of compilation. The last thing I really want to stress out is that I enjoyed this sampler very much and thus kept it spinning in my CD player for a long time (and I'll continue listening to it) and I also want to thank the guys who compiled it, because they gave me the chance to listen to some really cool bands, whose careers I'll start following from now on!
The bands that participate here are: CARRION, POWERSTROKE, TITAN, SLEEPLESS MALEFICE, HEIDRUN, THE EVIL PONY'S, SOLIFUGIA, FATAL RECOIL, THIRD DYNASTY, G.O.D., ORANGE HILL, THE DIFFERENCE, PREMATORY, BEAR, SEED OF ROCK, ALESIA, CORPSE MUTILATION, SHADES OF GREY and URZAMOTH.

SECRET SPHERE
Archetype
Marquee Avalon Records
Official Website

When I presented the album “Heart & Anger” from this Italian power metal band back in 2005, I was really impressed with how they could keep the balance between the traditional metal and the more pompous/symphonic parts of their sound. It was a release that was standing out for its quality. “Archetype” now tries to follow the same recipe with that album and up to a point I think it succeeds. Yes there are some worth to be mentioned compositions like “Archetype” (the fans of old EDGUY and ORDEN OGAN will enjoy this one), “Death from Above” and “Line of Fire” (the chorus reminded me a bit of HAMMERFALL’s “Hearts on Fire”). However, the band with this release comes out more pompous than needed and the album is so overproduced that you might get impressed by the first listening, but after a couple more times you realize that you can’t remember most songs of this album. You just have the sense that everything is played and done to the maximum with no other reason than to impress you. “Archetype” might not be bad as a modern power metal release, but SECRET SPHERE have proven to me that they could do better than this. Maybe the younger ages of metal heads might be impressed by this release, but the most experienced ones will need something less pompous and with more substance in order to be impressed. This one is only for the true fanatics of this genre…

MISTHERIA
Dragon Fire
Lion Music Records
Official Website

Lion Music as a label releases mainly progressive and neoclassical metal albums and from time to time they also release projects where many known musicians participates. This is the fourth full – length album of the Italian keyboard virtuoso Giuseppe "Mistheria" Iampieri  who under the name MISTHERIA managed to gather some great musicians like John West, Mark Boals, Rob Rock, Titta Tani, Lance King on vocals and George Bellas, Roger Staffelbach, Emir Hot, Neil Zaza on guitars. To name one song after the other where each one participates will take a lot of space that can be used better. Besides, a search on the net will help you find where each of the above mentioned musicians has contributed on this album. So, let me proceed to the most important part of this review, which is no other, but the music itself. On “Dragon Fire” you will have the chance to listen to an album that is built upon the foundations of neoclassical metal, but approaches this sound in a more progressive way, without some 70’s hard rock moments missing however from this release. As you can understand the album has a certain variety and if you like this kind of music, I think that you will find some good songs here. Personally, I think that the only disadvantage of this release is that it could be more original, since it is not so different from other releases of this sound. However, the quality of the musicians that participate here and their recognizable way of how they interpret the compositions, give to this release a certain quality to make even the most demanding fan of this genre find here something that will keep his/her interest during the whole listening of the album. On the other hand I believe that such musicians like the ones that participate here can give us better than just a simply good album. So my verdict is that “Dragon Fire” is a good neoclassical/progressive metal release, but definitely it doesn’t take a full advantage of the talent of the artists that contribute here and give us something breathtaking. My favorite song from here, although the whole album is pleasant to listen to, is the song entitled “The Beast”. A song that makes you think that it was written for the voice of the great Ronnie James Dio.
