1.First of all I’d like you to tell us a few things about the band
by pointing out the most important moments of the band’s life so far. Have
you ever faced any difficulties that gave you second thoughts regarding
the band?
Alessandro: Hello, Christine and Behind The Veil readers. First
of all, I'd like to thank you for this opportunity of talking to people
from your country about FATHER’S FACE. Well, every day, every step taken,
are victorious moments for us. As an independent band, there are enjoyable
moments each day, like this interview. At no moment we have had doubts
about our path. We know what we want for FATHER’S FACE.
2.Please tell us a few things about “Father’s Face”. Why should the
metallers check you out? What do you have to offer to the scene?
Alessandro: The demo “Father's Face” is a preview of what our first
album will be. It's a conceptual work based on Mary Shelley's book Frankenstein.
It's a description of the consequences of man trying to create life by
joining body parts, the return of soul to a lifeless body and the disastrous
consequences of this experiment. The instrumental part has many nuances
and sentences that connect a song to another making an allusion to the
musical composition style of the romantic period. Not only the composition
style but also the story derives from this period. Besides all of this,
a strong motive for people to check our material is that everything is
made with honesty, everything in our music is part of the band's personality
and nothing is artificially forced or directed by commercial motives.
3.On the same basis I’d also like you to point out the best and the
weakest moments or elements of the album according to you.
Alessandro: The same way parents love their children equally, a
musician loves his compositions at the same proportion. This is why I'd
rather let the listeners find out these points (laughter)
4.Which are the topics your lyrics deal with? Which are your sources
of inspiration?
Alessandro: As I said before, the main story is based on the one
by Mary Shelley, it always gives the listener the sensation that all of
this is very familiar and present. For example, we can say that the Internet
is a kind of a “Frankenstein” creature, it was made by man but now it is
“alive”, independent. A great source of inspiration is “Gesamtkunstwerk”
in which Richard Wagner preached the union of all arts: music, poetry,
drama and plastic arts.
5.“Father’s Face” consists of three songs only. So have you got any
new songs ready? Can you tell us a few things about them?
Alessandro: We have 3 other concluded songs and 5 more that are
being rearranged and having their lyrics written. All of them fit, of course,
into the album's conceptual idea. Also, there are special atmospheres for
each one of them.
6.The cover artwork of the album is simple and beautiful. Who’s responsible
for it and how is it connected to the album’s essence and lyrics?
Alessandro: Thanks a lot for the compliments. This drawing was found
on the Internet and digital designer Ricard Mephisto worked on it until
this dark ambience was reached. It's a sinister landscape, like the one
in the story, and it allows us to think of what could have happened in
its interior. It's the symbol of the unknown. The unknown is the cause
of our deepest fears. Maybe that is the explanation to fear of the dark,
it's something that can't be seen or touched.
7.Can you name some of your biggest influences? Which are those bands
that made you realize this is the kind of music you enjoy the most?
Alessandro: Various artists have influenced us, but we have some
in common: IRON MAIDEN, RUSH, SLAYER, DREAM THEATER, METALLICA, QUEENSRYCHE,
MEGADETH, SYMPHONY X, SEPULTURA, PINK FLOYD and many others. Richard Wagner
is also one of the basis of this work.
8.What kind of feedback have you received this far? What was the best
and what the most unfair comment you’ve read about your music?
Alessandro: Luckily, we have only had positive reviews until now
(or at least the negative ones haven't come to our ears). All reviews were
of the same importance to us, that's why I prefer not to mention any of
them.
9.Have you sent your demo to any labels? What would you like to be offered
in order to sign a deal with a label?
Alessandro: We haven't sent our demo to any labels because we'll
do everything in an independent manner. What we will really need is distribution
agreements inside and outside Brazil. I believe labels are too busy with
their greatest artists and they end up neglecting their secondary artists
after all. If there is a label that distributes your work widely, that
plans a great promotional tour, that manages to make good prices for the
consumer, that is able to maintain the band free of financial problems
which could spoil its work and also allows the artist to work without commercial
influences, I give up being independent. (laughter)
10.What do you think of the Internet? Many blame it for the financial
crisis in the music industry. Where do you stand regarding this matter?
Alessandro: The Internet is an excellent way for promoting any band.
The financial crisis got the ones who earned more than what they needed.
Because of the crisis, CD prices had to be revised. The Internet revealed
lots of artists who were hidden offering their work practically for free,
but we know everything has its price. Everything has a positive and a negative
side, you need to know how to take advantage of the positive side and how
to keep your distance from the negative one.
11.What kind of emotions and thoughts do you believe your music creates
to your listeners?
Alessandro: Our intention is to create a dense atmosphere that makes
the listener think about why we should all execute a great project until
the end. What should be sacrificed for this? Until where should we go?
How do we know if we are on the right path? Self-criticism is something
that elevates your work, but it is also the most complicated way for knowing
where we really are.
12.How are you promoting your work? Do you play live shows often? How
easy is it for an unsigned band to promote their work?
Alessandro: We are using the Internet to promote our material, to
make people listen to it for the first time. We have a partner that has
been giving us great support (http://ikaruspress.com/)
and also through sending our demo. We are already organizing our shows
and we intend to go on stage in the end of this year. There are already
some proposals for playing live. We also intend to have our own show equipment,
It's a way of ensuring we will play more frequently. Regarding the difficulties,
I think a united and creative group gets over anything.
13.Is there a phrase you think can encompass everything FATHER’S FACE
stands for?
Alessandro: A typical sound in 3 dimensions.
14.By the way how did you come up with this band name? It’s a bit weird.
Alessandro: About the name FATHER’S FACE – someone that has the
face of their creator, his DNA, that is his representation in which anyone
can recognize their offspring... 5 musicians that made a creature, the
voiced representation of our abstract ideas…
15.Thank you! These lines belong to you…
Alessandro: We would like to thank you again and say that we were
very excited about your invitation to this interview, our first interview
outside South America. We hope to visit your lovely country, meet you personally,
learn about your culture and show our work live. Remember that it's people
like you, who work with real passion, that make heavy metal a powerful
and solid music scene. Together we must work to keep everything like this...
