1. Hello! How are you? “Sex Drugs Anarchy” is your third full
– length release. How do you feel about it? In which ways do you believe
you have evolved your sound?
Rod: Im fine thanks, how are you Nikos?
This time we acted as producer ourselves and this is what GEMINI
FIVE has always been about; loud guitars and great melodies. The songs
and the sound of the new album are simple because this is always what GEMINI
FIVE has been all about from the start. We have not succeded in putting
all that frustration into our previous records though... So we figured,
this time we do it ourselves! No one is gonna tell us what to do or how
to sound. This is the first time Slim Pete, Tin Star and myself are a 100%
satisfied of how the band is being presented. This is how we have always
been expressing ourselves live on stage. We're not a pussy band! The anger
comes from the sweet taste of revenge. We do not want to be compromising
with an outside person like a producer. It's like trying to please someone
that is there for his own 'brand' which sometimes does not sum up with
what we're all about! I mean, this new album is the best damn album in
this genre for 20 years! And it's all thanks to Slim, Tin and I. A lot
of the frustration came from not being happy about the band's 'situation'
last year 2007. We sat down and discussed the whole thing and came
to the conclusion that some things had to change to make this band big!
We fired the guitarist since he wasn't happy with the direction of the
new songs. We ended the partnership with our management and ended the collaboration
with the supposed producer of the album, Kory Clarke. He didn't bring what
we had in mind for the album and it ended with me producing the producer...
We even threw out the recordings we did with Kory and Snoopy since it really
gave us angst just listening to it. Kory may be a great singer but he wasn't
cutting it as a G5 producer.
2. Why did you name your album “Sex Drugs Anarchy”? Is it, in your opinion,
just provoking or a thought provoking title (make the people think about
the current situation of our world)? Did you face any problems with such
a title?
Rod: Problems = exposure! I wanted a title and cover that would
make you go, "what the hell"!!! A reaction of people being put off and
offended because of the album cover. The title is just a play of words
from the cliché; "Sex drugs and rock n roll" but that's a lame phrase
to me. Also the album cover photo shows what the music is all about: a
good old smack on the teeth! SEX PISTOLS are my heroes so there are a lot
of references on this album to them. One song is titled "All pistols" and
we are using the Anarchy sign "A" in a circle to the artwork and stage
backdrops etc. The title song itself is about a non working, non healthy
relationship between a girl/boy. "-what are you doing to me - we got sex,
drugs, anarchy"
3. Since you are one of the founders of GEMINI FIVE, how did you come
up with the idea to form this band? Did you have any bands before GEMINI
FIVE? If yes, did you release any albums with them?
Rod: Tin Star and Slim Pete released 3 albums with the band JEKYLL
& HYDE during the 90's. That band also had members and can today be
found in bands like HAMMERFALL and THE POODLES. I played guitar with the
American band BEAUTIFUL CREATURES in 2000 and that band is still going
strong. The lead guitarst DJ Ashba is to be found in Nikki Sixx's new
band SIXX A.M.
4. I don’t know why, but your name reminds me of a Japanese comic hero
(it sounds like a title of an Anime movie). How did you come up with this
name? Which is its meaning?
Rod: I came up with the name since we didn't want a lame pussy name
like Dixxie Lixxie Dangerous Whizpers. We wanted a name that is universal
and didn't sound glam or rock n' roll. It's the name of a NASA rocket ship
from the 60's. Surely people have heard about the Apollo project taking
man to the moon but before that there was the Gemini project rocketing
man to the sky. Just simply rocket number 5 or in Roman "V". However
we spell it F-I-V-E.
5. Before I listened to your CD I did a little research on the net and
I saw that many describe you as a glam rock band. However your sound is
100% heavy metal. How do you feel about it? Do you think that this kind
of description can make people that like heavy metal not listen to you?
Rod: You are a 100 % absolutely right! WE ARE NOT A GLAM BAND. We
are about metal guitars, black leather and studs and we have heroes such
as JUDAS PRIEST, DIO, MOTLEY CRUE. This is about to be changed. Of course
such a decription makes people not listen to us! There's a prejustice to
bands who are wearing tight leather and eyeliner... There's an obvious
flirt with the 80's band like RATT and MOTLEY CRUE, but they were COOL
bands. We have absolutely nothing in common with bands like POISON etc.
We even share the same manager as HAMMERFALL and BULLET. That's metal!
:) So set aside your bias and vist our myspace to find out what we're all
about: WWW.MYSPACE.COM/GEMINIFIVE
6. Let’s come back to your new album. Did you leave any song out from
“Sex Drugs Anarchy”? If yes, why? Do you plan to release them in a future
release of yours?
Rod: Yes, we threw away some 4-5 songs which simply didn't stand
the standards of what we wanted a great record to be all about. Then we
wrote 3 new GREAT songs with Martin Sweet from the band CRASAHDÏET.
One left out track "Crash city" is to be found on an American compilation;
Mama Trash Family Artists - Volume II
7. Which was the weirdest description that you ever listened or read
about your music? Can you share it with us?
Rod: Some dumb ass Norweigan critic wrote to our first album 'Babylon
Rockets' [2003] that we where "too old to be wearing tight leather
and chains" and he wrote that "this first album was our last". Hehehe.
We get a lot that we're sounding like ALICE COOPER's "Trash" and BON JOVI,
but I don't agree since we do have a totally different approach and we
do not exist to reach fame among critics...
8. Since we talk about weird things.. Do you remember a funny or a weird
occasion that happened to you in your career as musician? Can you share
it with us?
Rod:There's one story that comes to mind on the spot! During the
tour with HARDCORE SUPERSTAR in 2004 there were a lot of practical jokes
and fun and specially the last show was the highlight. We have a song called
"TwentyFourSeven" and on each chorus we point our right arm straight to
the air when singing and the HARDCORE SUPERSTAR guys smeared some oily
black grease to my microphone foam cover. This resulted in me getting a
black moustache and by that time I had by bangs combed to the side which
made me look like Hitler doing a Sieg Hail... Hehehehe. People where staring
and laughing at me and I had no idea of what they all where laughing at...
Funny as hell :)
9. Your music has a lot of 80’s metal influences. So do you believe
that if you were back in the 80’s GEMINI FIVE would be much more successful
that they are now?
Rod: I guess so. Maybe we would have a major label backing us up
and there would a lot more album sales... People don't buy music today
but there's other ways to promote a band today with the Internet etc. And
we have a great flow of recognition and fans worldwide thanks to the Internet.
10. Thanks for your time answering my questions! Hope to see you some
day here in Greece for a live show. The last lines belong to you…
Rod: Thank you and hope to see you all very soon. In the meanwhile,
do check out our MySpace for great music, hundreds of pics and free downloads
of 5 new tracks from "Sex Drugs Anarchy".
