1. NECRODEATH is one of the oldest and best
established Italian metal bands, so can you share your experiences throughout
these twenty plus years of existence? Pinpoint the best and worst moments
of the band.
PESO: NECRODEATH has always been a part of
my life and still continue so… Next year we’ll celebrate 25 years of noise
and sure I will promise something nice for all our fans… in 25 years there
are too many great and bad moments… it’s a part of live…
2. What kind of changes have you observed in the
metal scene all these years?
PESO: Right! Now more bands play and they
are more technical… the big problem is the Internet… in a way it seems
to help the bands to gain more attention, but in the end everybody downloads
all the songs and this thing kills the new bands!!
3. All of the band members also deal with other
bands as well. How do you find the time and which are your priorities?
Furthermore, how do you “know” which ideas and riffs you write, you should
use with each band?
PIER: Yes all NECRODEATH members have some
side projects. It’s not a problem, when all band members feel good together
they can organize all their activities. We play together for many
years so we know very well ourselves. Personally I’ve been playing some
years with the band LABYRINTH and actually I have my band MASTERCASTLE,
but NECRODEATH always is a priority for me.
4. Recently you released your new album “Phylogenesis”.
Can you tell us a few things about it? Which are its best and which its
weakest moments you think?
GL: “Phylogenesis” is a concept album about
the evolution of species and time passing by is the main idea of all of
the tracks. The first three songs are about the past scientific and religious
theories about the creation of mankind, the next three songs deal with
the present and in the last three songs we imagine the future like the
complete destruction of all human beings.
5. Are you happy with the end result on “Phylogenesis”?
Are you in the position of tracing things you’re not so happy with or is
it still too early for such a process?
PIER: As we finished recording “Phylogenesis”
we were happy. The album was produced in the best way and all song were
very valued. After the releasing the result is the same. The album was
accepted very well all over the world. It was compared to the first NECRODEATH
albums “Into the Macabre” and “Fragments of Insanity” that are considered
“cult”album. So finally we are happy!
6. Why did you name the album like that? What
do you want to suggest? Does it have to do with what phylogenesis is in
biology? Which are the main topics your lyrics deal with?
PESO: It’s a concept CD based on time… the
time that has passed, the present and the time that will be… the future…
three songs for each of this subjects… check it and buy “Phylogenesis”…
;)
7. “Phylogenesis” has been well received so far.
However your previous album “Draculea” didn’t have much of an impact on
the fans. Why do you think? Have you traced “flaws” or “mistakes” on “Draculea”?
Are there things you would have done differently now? Which would they
be?
PIER: I think “Draculea” is really a good
album. After years I cannot find any mistakes. It simply contains
some differents atmospheres or some “cervellotic” parts in some songs.
But it contains the old school NECRODEATH thrash style. You have just to
listen to it a couple of times, and you will find really many good details
on it.
8. Which song or songs do you think stand out
and are the most ideal to represent the album’s essence?
GL: The compositions are extremely easy to
listen and aggressiveness stands out clearly. It reflects exactly what
we are now and I'm sure that the people who love old school thrash metal
will love our record too! Personally I like “Awakening of Dawn” for the
aggressive impact, “INRI” for the chorus and lyrics, “Propitiation of the
Gods” for different parts inside the song.
9. Who created the cover artwork? It’s very beautiful!
How is it connected to the lyrics?
GL: We absolutely love the artwork, the cover
is very modern and new, still it has a clear hint to the past if we compare
it to the first album “Into the Macabre”. Still in this hostile place juxtaposed
elements like fire and water for instance melt together and are part of
each other and exactly reflects the same essence of our songs and it is
strongly bound to the idea of time, just think of the last song “Final
War”.
10. How are you planning to promote your new work?
Have you got any plans for a tour?
PIER: Yes, “Phylogenesis” was very well accepted
so we are planning many tours. We played in Greece this summer, we will
play in Finland at the end of November, and we will make a European tour
from 5 to 15 March 2010 (France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland etc).
11. The Internet is a very important tool. However
it seems to be affecting the labels in a negative way… Which are your thoughts
on that issue?
PIER: It’s just like you say... the Internet
is the best way to diffuse any kind of culture, this is a great thing.
But in other aspects it needs some rules. The illegal music downloads are
becoming really shameful.
12. What feelings and thoughts do you think your
music creates to your listeners?
GL: Ooooh I don’t know!!! When we compose
our songs we try to be completely free and to follow our ideas only, we
don't care about the reactions of the other people. Our target is to compose
good music that represents us and our thoughts, I don’t think what our
music create to our listeners.
13. Is there a phrase or title you think represents
NECRODEATH in the best possible way?
GL: Perseverance and playing hard….pays off!!!
14. Thank you! Leave a message to your fans…
GL: We want to thank you and Behind The Veil
for supporting us and we hope we'll be soon on tour in your country for
some shows! Special thanks for all NECRODEATH fans in Greece!
