1. First of all I’d like you to fill us in on what’s happening in
the THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE camp at the moment.
Nothing really exciting, we try to promote “New Thing” and we're
writing the songs of the second album.
2. Please point out the most important moments and experiences you’ve
had with the band thus far, be them good or bad.
The band is quite young (less than 2 years), the most important
moments for now are writing and recording “New Thing”; which was quite
fun. We also got lots of good experience on stage.
3. How would you describe your sound? I’m asking this because your music
obviously has a great deal of elements. Which do you think are the most
prominent ones?
Our sound is the mix of all that we love, we couldn't bear staying
in one kind of music. The most prominent ones are black metal, screamo
and post-hardcore... even jazz sometimes.
We built this band focusing on one thing that we wanted to be free
in our compositions, that's why “New Thing” can be found so diversified.
4. Have you got any new songs ready? Fill us in on the band releases.
Yeah, of course we have!!! In fact about 50% of the next album is
already written. We'll try to record it in 2012.
5. Why do you think you stand out from most melodic death/thrash metal
bands out there? What do you believe you can offer to the metal scene?
We do not consider ourselves as a metal band, we just try to play
our style, non-depending of a scene. If we succeed in being liked by different
scenes then our bet is won.
6. What kind of procedure do you follow when you compose songs? Do you
have to be in a certain state of mind in order to perform the songs as
you want?
Usually Max (guitarist) comes up with new riffs, everyone tries
to compose around those riffs; while our singer sits in a couch. Then he
tells us that it sucks and tells us to add rhythmic feints or stuff like
this.
7. Which song or songs do you think are the most ideal to represent
the whole album’s essence?
I think “Black Rain Falls in Drop” is the most representative of
the album. If you want the most violent, I think it's “The Horse Feed their
Birds”.
8. Which are your sources of inspiration when it comes to the lyrics?
Which are the main topics you deal with?
The main topics are life, life and… life. Seriously the singer only
writes his vision of the world, how we're bringing it to an end. How life
can be lost easily.
9. Why did you name the album “New Thing...”? What do you mean? That
your music's a new thing, everything around the band or is it something
totally different?
In fact, “New Thing” refers to free jazz and the liberty which emanates
from this kind of style!
We do not pretend to bring new thing to the music world.
10. Who created the cover artwork? Why have you chosen a photo of a
building being constucted? The reference is obvious of course, but I'd
like to know your point of view.
Our friend Harry Hadler (who is a great artist) made the artwork!
We chose the picture of the building, first because we liked its
aesthetic then because it represents quite well the universe of the
band.
11. Have you got any plans for live shows? How are you promoting your
work? What do you think of the use of the Internet? How helpful is it for
a new band?
Yes, we had plans for lives and we will have many in the future.
The stage is very important to us, it's always a pleasure to share our
music with people.
About the promotion, we have two excellent labels (Throatruiner
and Swarm Of Nails) who work a lot on it! We will never thank them
enough for all they've made!
12. The music industry blames the Internet for the financial crisis
they are in. Where do you stand on this matter? Which are your views and
thoughts and what made you release your album through Throatruiner Records
that are all for free downloading?
I think that if major labels sell their records cheaper, there would
be no crisis. They just kill themselves trying to make money.
The Internet is a really great media for spreading music, and we
do think that anyone, depend-less of his money, can discover things, so
that was natural for us to release the album for free downloading.
13. What kind of feelings and thoughts do you think your music creates
to your listeners?
We really don't know. One of our friends (who is a teacher) plays
our CD to his students, there reactions were “It's dark, violent and intense”.
14. Is there a phrase that you think describes THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE
in the best possible way?
We definitively have no idea!
15. Thank you! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks to Matthias @ Throatruiner, Kevin @ Swarm Of Nails, our friends
and you for the interview!!!!!
