1. First of all I’d like you to fill us in on what’s happening in the UNDERDARK camp at the moment.

Dyvan: Hi Christine! At this moment, we're working on the new material for our second album (we plan its release in 2012), and our first EP that we plan to unleash this year.
2. Please point out the most important moments and experiences you’ve had with the band thus far, be them good or bad.
Dyvan: The most important moments in our short history are: recording our first demo, the mini tour over Poland with our friends, ROTENGEIST, finding our drummer (Kamil aka Blasturbator from EMBRIONAL), recording and releasing our debut album, finding a record label to release it in Poland (Psycho Records) and abroad (Sleaszy Rider Records). At the beginning of this year we played on the Dark Unity Tour as a headliners (organized by Kornel Kontros from Ukrainian bands CASTRUM and VULVULATOR – regards my friend!) and we were accompanied by the band CASTRUM.
3. Can you present “In the Name of Chaos” to our readers in a few words? Which are the album’s highlights and which its weak moments or elements, according to you?
Drizzt: It is a bit hard to do it in a few words, but to me “In The Name of Chaos” consists of different elements. At first you’ve got death metal, a sort of traditional, not old school but old style one. At a second glance you’ve got classical music or movie soundtrack motifs. At a third glance you’ve got guitar work making cool melodies and harmony. At next glance you’ve got 260 bmp blasting. It depends on the eye of the beholder, because different people have different opinions.
To me the sound is the only element which can be improved on our next albums, but I also heard good opinions about it, so better you should have your own opinion.
4. Which are main bands and albums that have influenced you and made you realize this is the kind of music you like to play?
Dyvan: Since I was 12 or 13 years old, I've been listening a lot of metal bands, like SEPULTURA, CANNIBAL CORPSE, GORGUTS, SLAYER, HYPOCRUSY, DEATH, S.O.D., KREATOR, NAPALM DEATH, SODOM, MORBID ANGEL, CARCASS, GRAVE, ENTOMBED, DISHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, PROTECTOR, BRUTAL TRUTH, CORONER and many, many more. I think these bands have influenced me, but in UNDERDARK we don't assume that we play death metal and nothing else. It comes naturally. New material shows you that we do not keep up death metal tightly, you'll hear many black metal riffs etc.
5. I know that this is your debut official release, but have you got any previously released demos? Does the new album contain songs from the demos or entirely new ones? Fill us in on the band releases.
Dyvan: We have recorded one demo CD in 2007. On the debut album we re-recorded 2 songs from the demo (“Monument of Hypocrisy” and “Manifestation of Denial”). The rest of the material is new songs.
6. Why do you think you stand out from most death metal bands out there? What do you believe you can offer to the metal scene?
Drizzt: That’s a big question, but I believe that we can offer something to the metal scene. If not why would we play then? :) I guess we can attract those who love brutal, extreme metal music but pay attention not only to technique, blasting and complicated structures of songs but also the general atmosphere of the music, the mood that you can hear on the album and the emotions the music carries.
7. What kind of procedure do you follow when you compose songs? Do you have to be in a certain state of mind in order to perform the songs as you want?
Drizzt: It really depends. Sometimes I can write a song out of the blue. Sometimes I just need time for a little daydreaming and something starts “creeping” in my brain. I don’t need a guitar even. A few days ago I did a very long car journey, I was alone, my car stereo broke down, there was nothing to distract me, except for the road itself. When I got back my girlfriend asked me “What did you do?”. Songwriting, I replied.
This is how it goes. Then we get together, play the songs and each one of us gives ideas. Sometimes the song remains 100% the same. Sometimes we add different riffs and arrangements.
I really appreciate opinions from my bands mates. If Dyvan Spider or Blasturbator have other points of view, and want to add something it that’s great because they all have good tastes. We may disagree on a particular riff or arrangement, but it adds other options, and gives new ideas to work on.
Do I have to be in a certain state of mind? For me it doesn’t matter but once I wrote a song while being drunk. That was cool :)
8. Which song or songs do you think are the most ideal to represent the whole album’s essence?
Drizzt: “World Reframed” (the one we used for the video), and “In the Name of Chaos”. They both have the same features. There are fast and have brutal riffs, but on the other hand they are full of unconventional (in my humble opinion) and surprising melodies and harmony.
9. Which are your sources of inspiration when it comes to the lyrics? Which are the main topics you deal with?
Drizzt: What can I say, sometimes I’m a bookworm :) I’m a high fantasy freak but fantasy is not the only literature I’m into. You can have various sources of inspiration: life, problems, being pissed off, movies, books, computer games and whatever you can think of. For me it’s books, but I also heard an advice simply to have open eyes for observation and open mind for thinking. That can give you big inspiration.
There is however one song on the album called “Monument of Hypocrisy”, which stands out, because the lyrics are a message about the corruption of the Roman popery.
10. Why did you name the album “In the Name of Chaos”? What would you do or what do you think people do in the name of chaos? Give me please your interpretation on the album title and tell me how it's connected to the lyrics.
Drizzt: I don’t want to go into details, so let me just briefly answer your question. You see we use this symbol “chaos star” made by Moorcock. It is also called “infinite possibility”. However I haven’t thought about, what I, or others would do in the name of “chaos”, it would give me infinite ways to go, infinite choices metaphorically speaking :)
The truth is that there is no artistic or metaphoric meaning behind this title, so let’s go to the next question, shall we?
11. Who created the cover artwork? It’s very beautiful! How is it connected to the album title and lyrics?
Dyvan: The artwork was created by very talented artist Darek “Dereek” Migacz. We just wrote for him on paper our visions about the cover, it was not arranged visions. He created a few covers, we chose the one and start to improve it, and the finally you see what is on the cover official ;)
12. Have you got any plans for live shows? How are you promoting your work? What do you think of the use of the Internet? How helpful is it for a new band?
Drizzt: For me contact with real audience is the best way to promote your music. You can be an Internet superstar but for me, as a fan of music, live performance is always the best. The Internet is helpful. I spoke to people who promoted their music in early nineties. They had big limitations. Nowadays it is easier for communication immediate access that fans can have to what you do and what you can offer. For me it’s pointless to discuss whether it’s good or bad because the Internet is a fact you can’t deny. You just have to use it, but use it in a good effective way.
13. How did you get in touch with Sleaszy Rider Records and what do you think of your cooperation thus far?
Drizzt: We’ve simply sent them a promo pack with “In the Name of Chaos”. After exchanging a few email we got signed. We’ve got a CD released, we’re going to record our next album for SRR, SRR helped us with the video. We were aware that we, a debuting underground act from Poland, cannot expect too much from a label yet. You know how the business works in most cases. But so far so good. For me everything is as it has been agreed. I heard many complaints from people who play at least equally good as we do that they didn’t get signed. I heard about bands being signed but never having their album released. What puts us in a quite good position, doesn’t it?
14. The music industry blames the Internet for the financial crisis they are in. Where do you stand on this matter? Which are your views and thoughts and what made you release your album independently?
Drizzt: Unfortunately the Internet kills parts of the business. But on the other hand there are still people who buy the music. I know some who do it on a regular basis.
15. What kind of feelings and thoughts do you think your music creates to your listeners?
Drizzt: What feelings did our music create to you? To be honest with you I’ve never thought about it. Really. If our music creates any feeling to the listener it’s good and I think or at least I hope it does. You know if you listen to the music and it does not touch you in any sense that’s bad in my opinion.
16. Is there a phrase that you think describes UNDERDARK in the best possible way?
Drizzt: If you mean UNDERDARK as a band that would be “nunquam retrorsus”, a Latin proverb meaning “never back”. “Nunquam retrorsus” is the name of the hidden bonus track you can hear a few minutes of silence at the end of the album. But if you mean the word UNDERDARK it is more or less the same as the word hell or abyss.
17. By the way how did you choose this moniker and are you aware there are 3-4 more bands out there with the same name?
Drizzt: Actually when we begin to use this name with Spider, we were not aware of this fact. Later on we discovered this fact. Well can’t tell you what would be if we knew that it has been formerly used by anyone. But let me tell you, there are many bands that “share” names, and let’s hope that UNDERDARK is going to be associated with death metal, Poland.
18. What's going on in the Polish metal scene? Why does Poland mainly have extreme metal bands? Any bands you think deserve our attention?
Dyvan: Polish scene is very strong, we have many great bands like STILLBORN, EMBRIONAL, IPERYT, etc. but the fans are very divided with their opinions about most of bands. On the other hand we have great stoner/rock/rock'n'roll bands like CORRUPTION, BLACKRIVER, LEASH EYE, BLACKSNAKE (I play the bass in this band), heavy/thrash metal bands like SACRIFER, HORRORSCOPE, ROTENGEIST.
19. Thank you! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Dyvan: Thank You very much for the interest in our band! Check our official web sites, YouTube channel, Facebook and MySpace profile. Best regards!
